BabKubwa.com is an online magazine and social network, focused on enabling East African artists to connect with their fans at home and abroad.
BabKubwa.com was registered in 2005 by Ralph Godden. The websites initial aim was to promote the album “Mapito” – which consisted of collaborations between Tanzanian and UK artists. The album was released in 2006 by New York world hiphop label Nomadic Wax and all proceeds were donated to the Against Malaria Foundation.
In 2007 the website was given a makeover and redesigned as a wordpress blog. As well as an outlet for BabKubwa’s own music productions the website also began covering entertainment news relating to Tanzanian Bongo Flava, and other international Hip-Hop.
In 2008 babkubwa.com welcomed the addition of Michael Mlingwa, who regularly blogged about up and coming Bongo Flava artists and served as a point of contact for Artists in Tanzania. After attracting a substantial following through these regular news updates babkubwa.com made the transition from WordPress to the Ning platform and became a fully featured social network.
Whilst news updates and blog articles relating to the Tanzanian Entertainment scene continued to provide the main attractoin to babkubwas fanbase, user generated content in the form of profile pags, video uploads and lively forums gave the website a life of its own. Membership saw a sharp increase and is currently approaching 4000 regular users.
